Bright Lights
I could barely sleep last night from a relentless glow coming from my boyfriend's room which is opposite of mine down the hallway. The glow would beam brightly and flash hysterically. I was in awe for the longest time. Hours passed and it was getting really late. I was getting tired so I dozed off. I woke up a few hours later and looked up again. It was still glowing! I was getting kind of scared/angry because he was still up doing someting ridiculous. I walked in there to see what was going on, and he was sleeping peacefully in his bed. I didn't see anything that could be shining that brightly. I walked back into my room, and the glow was still beaming. I'm still utterly confused. Could the moon be that bright? Who knows.

Night
Photo from irishviews.com
Night symbolizes a world without God. Night occurs when suffering is worse. Elie loses his faith and thoughts on God, therefore darkening his world. Him and his father watch babies being burned, lighting up the night sky. The majority of the horrible things happen at night. It is completely dark as the runners begin their run from Buna.
This picture is practical because it shows the darkness, but with light shining through. It shows that sliver of hope that some were still holding on too. Night shows Elies loss in God, but the shining moon shows that Elie did pray every once in awhile. He wasn't completely lost for him.
Fire
Photo from scrapbookpages.com
The first thing I think about when I think of "fire" is the crematorium. This picture represents fire in that way. This is a picture of the one of the crematoriums. When the woman on the train was screaming about the fire, it was a prophetic sign of these chimneys. This is a very disturbing picture, but it shows how small they were, and how they just kept putting more bodies in there.
Fire is a symbol of the Nazi's cruel power. Elie also sees them burning babies in the ditch. In Jewish faith, fire is a symbol of God's wrath, which Elie loses faith in. The wicked yield the power of fire, using it to burn innocent people.

The Importance of Father-Son Bonds
Elie is disgusted by the selfishness he sees around him. He sees many songs abusing their fathers. In order to save themselves, the sons are willing to sacrifice their fathers. Despite how much he hated everything the men in the camps were doing, Elie himself also sacrificed his father. His father's presence, though, allowed to him to keep strong, and want to live.
I think this picture shows father son bonding in a very humorous way. It shows that the son wants to be just like daddy. It shows that he looks up to dad, and very obviously loves him. I think this is appropriate because Elie did love his father very much, he even looked up to him. Elie did what he thought was best, if not they both may have died.

Inhumanity Toward Other Humans
This picture shows this theme, thoroughly. This man is just trying to escape the Nazi's cruel torture. It looks as if maybe he is reaching towards God. He is beaten and bruised and his head is shaved, due to what Germany thought would solve all their problems. He stands in front of Aushwitz where most of the book took place.
Elie experiences cruelity from the Nazis. He also sees the cruelity that he himself is capable of. He left his own father to die as his name was the man's last words. As the cruelity continues, the "prisoners" themselves become cruel. They beat and kill each other just for a scrap of food. They beat and kill each other if they are a burden, or extra baggage. They'd even go low enough to steal teeth and rags of clothing.

Silence
Elie finds the idea of God's silence to be the most troubling. Him and his friends are left to question why such an all knowing God will not help them, especially since they are so devoted to him. There is also the silence of the victims, and the lack of revolting. It was the silence that allowed the Holocaust to continue.
The first thing I see when I look at this picture is Juliek playing his violin sadly, while releasing his soul, at the end of the novel. Everyone was silent as he played his final piece. The empty chairs remind me of the people. They are nothing but hollow shells, who have so much, yet nothing to say. To me it is also a bunch of loves and passions...abandoned. Which to me just screams, silence.

Eliezer’s Struggle to Maintain Faith in a Benevolent God
Elie Struggles with his faith in God throughout the book. At the beginning his faith is absolute, but towards the end it softens to almsot nothing. He grew up believing that everything on earth reflects God's power and holiness. Once he sees how terrible The Holocaust is and what it is doing to him and his people, how could he keep his faith? He no longer sees good in the human race, or mercy from God.
This picture says "Imagine No Religion". This was really appropriate for the Theme. People have faith in something higher than themselves to get them through life. They see it as a helping hand to reach from the heaven's and pick them up off the ground. They see it as a reason to be a better person, to live a good healthy life, and just simply for something to believe in. When Elie loses his faith, he no longer as a reason to keep going. Where did his God go? Why should he believe in God, when all these people are dying? He has a very good reason to lose his Photo faith.

An Untitled Sonnet
I look into the eyes of the deceived,
a vast blue imprint on my forgotten heart.
Again i find myself questioning your leave.
I never expected a day we would part.
I am a trajedy broken and confused.
My love for you lingers quietly still.
My heart not longer beats for its greatly bruised.
Find a new love, but i cannot find the will.
Yet, I have given up you're close behind,
awaiting with my heart close to your own.
You have found a light and oh! how it shines,
with promises of never being alone.
A trajedy remains but i move on.
N ow we await a love that shall grow strong.
a vast blue imprint on my forgotten heart.

The Eyes of the Night
The eyes of the night are watching me,
as I lie awake in bed.
They see my every move and thought,
as they pierce inside my head.
I slowly try to forget,
the gleaming outside.
I put the blanket over my head.
I know, though, I cannot hide.
They watch me intensely,
as the sun rises to a new day.
I look out in hopes for identity,
but the eyes have gone away.
I feel the stalk lurch,
as I walk into the light.
Were these the same eyes
that watched at night?
I look at all the people,
that eagerly pass by.
Each with there own look and smirk,
but none of them have eyes.
as I lie awake in bed.
They see my every move and thought,
as they pierce inside my head.
I slowly try to forget,
the gleaming outside.
I put the blanket over my head.
I know, though, I cannot hide.
