Night

Photo from irishviews.com

Night symbolizes a world without God. Night occurs when suffering is worse. Elie loses his faith and thoughts on God, therefore darkening his world. Him and his father watch babies being burned, lighting up the night sky. The majority of the horrible things happen at night. It is completely dark as the runners begin their run from Buna.
This picture is practical because it shows the darkness, but with light shining through. It shows that sliver of hope that some were still holding on too. Night shows Elies loss in God, but the shining moon shows that Elie did pray every once in awhile. He wasn't completely lost for him.
